Stories from MUUR Atelier.
Fine jewelry is designed to be worn and cherished, but like any precious investment, it requires mindful care to maintain its luster. Whether it is a diamond engagement ring or a family heirloom, daily habits and proper storage are the keys to longevity. Here is your comprehensive guide to keeping your pieces as breathtaking as the day you received them.
The Golden Rule: "Last On, First Off"
Cosmetics are the silent enemy of gemstones and precious metals. Lotions, hairsprays, and perfumes contain chemicals that can dull gold and build up grime behind stones, reducing their sparkle.
- 1 Morning Routine: Put your jewelry on only after you have finished your hair, makeup, and perfume application.
- 2 Evening Routine: Remove your jewelry first, before washing your face or applying night creams.
When to Remove Your Jewelry
Diamond is the hardest natural substance on Earth, but it is not indestructible. Gold and platinum are malleable metals that can bend under pressure. To prevent damage, always remove your pieces during:
The Gym & Physical Labor
Lifting weights can warp ring bands, and hard impacts can chip gemstones. Sweat can also tarnish sterling silver.
Swimming & Showers
Chlorine in pools bleaches gold alloys, weakening the structure over time. Cold water can shrink fingers, causing rings to slip off.
How to Clean Jewelry at Home
For most diamond, sapphire, and ruby jewelry set in gold or platinum, a simple soak is the safest method.
The Gentle Soak Method
- Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a bowl of warm (not hot) water.
- Gently brush the stone with a very soft toothbrush, focusing on the back of the setting where grime collects.
- Rinse thoroughly under warm running water (ensure the drain is plugged!).
- Pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Warning: Never use ultrasonic cleaners for Emeralds, Pearls, Opals, or Tanzanites. These porous or treated stones can crack under vibration. Clean them only with a soft, damp cloth.
Proper Storage
Diamonds can scratch other diamonds, as well as gold and silver. Tossing everything into a single drawer is a recipe for scratches.
- Separation: Store each piece in its own fabric pouch or a compartmentalized jewelry box.
- Environment: Keep your jewelry box in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to prevent silver tarnish and gemstone fading.
- Fastening: Close clasps on necklaces before storing to prevent tangling.
Time for a Professional Checkup?
We recommend a professional inspection every 6 to 12 months. Our jewelers check for loose prongs, worn mountings, and perform a deep steam clean.
