The Studs Guide

Simplicity, sophistication, and how to choose the perfect pair.

If there is one piece of jewelry that belongs in every collection, it is the stud earring. They are the "Little Black Dress" of the jewelry world—versatile enough for the gym, elegant enough for a wedding, and essential for everything in between.

But simpler designs often mean the details matter more. From diamond quality to the security of the backing, here is everything you need to know before investing in your forever pair.

1. Choosing Your Stone

While diamonds are the classic choice, they aren't the only option. Your choice depends on your budget and personal style.

Natural Diamonds

The traditional choice. For studs, you can often compromise slightly on Clarity and Color compared to a ring, as they are viewed from further away.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Physically identical to mined diamonds but 30-40% more affordable. This allows you to get a larger carat size for the same budget.

Gemstones

Sapphires, Rubies, or Emeralds add a pop of color. Birthstones make for a deeply personal gift.

Pearls

The epitome of grace. Akoya pearls offer that classic white luster, while Tahitian pearls bring a moody, modern edge.

2. Total Carat Weight (TCW) Explained

This is the most common confusion when buying studs. TCW refers to the combined weight of both earrings.

1.00 ct TCW = 0.50 carat on the left ear + 0.50 carat on the right ear.
2.00 ct TCW = 1.00 carat on the left ear + 1.00 carat on the right ear.

For everyday wear, a range between 0.50 ct TCW and 1.00 ct TCW is considered the "sweet spot"—noticeable but not heavy.

3. The Setting: Style vs. Security

How the stone is held changes the look entirely.

Basket Setting

The stone sits flat in a metal "basket." This is the most stable option and keeps the diamond sitting lower against the earlobe, preventing drooping.

Martini Setting

Shaped like a martini glass with three prongs. This uses the least amount of metal, making the diamond visible from all sides for maximum sparkle. However, it can dig into the ear hole if not fitted correctly.

Bezel Setting

A metal rim encircles the entire stone. This is the most secure modern look (no snagging on sweaters!) and makes the stone appear slightly larger.

Don't Forget the Backs!

Losing a diamond stud is a nightmare. Choose your backing wisely:

Push Backs (Butterfly): Standard and easy to use. Best for smaller, lighter studs.
Screw Backs: The post is threaded like a screw. Extremely secure, though they take longer to put on. Recommended for studs over 1.00 ct TCW.
Locking Backs: A mechanism that grips the post and requires a specific pinch to release. The "gold standard" for security.

4. Metal Choice

Since studs sit directly against the skin (and near sensitive piercing holes), metal quality is paramount.

Platinum: Hypoallergenic and naturally white. The best choice for sensitive ears.
18k or 14k Gold: A classic choice. If you have metal allergies, avoid low-karat gold which may contain nickel.
